Our New Office/Computer Centre
OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR, EMA
We are so very fortunate to be receiving an annual donation from a very generous couple who wishes to remain anonymous. This donation is specifically given to us for the purpose of operating and maintaining an office/computer centre in Chuburná Puerto.
The building, in the past, housed a community recycling service and is located on the property of Amira and Rubén who live next door. They have given us free use of the building so we only pay for electricity and water. We have hired a young local woman, Ema, who speaks Spanish and English to staff the office Mon.- Fri. from 8:00 - 11:00 and Tues - Fri. from 4:00 - 8:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 - 1:00.
She has already proven invaluable, helping us translate the thank-you letters written by our 95 students; answering questions when parents drop by, developing our inventory in spanish and english, updating each student's account with the supplies/uniforms they received this year. Having Ema at the office has made our volunteering so much more manageable.
For example, in the past handing out the student jackets and photos in October has meant our going door to door delivering them; with families often not being home, requiring a return visit from us... Now that we have an office, we will post the notice on the bulletin board that jackets and photos will be available for pick up, by our 95 students, from EMA at the Office... hooray!!
THANKS TO THE WORLD SCHOOL & CARLA GILMORE we have 9 laptops for the students to use. We are always in need of laptops and computers which are in good working order, so if you are upgrading, please consider donating your older model; and asking friends & family to do the same when they come to visit.
THANKS TO THE INTERNET COMPANY, IDT, FOR PROVIDING FREE INTERNET SERVICE. We paid for the installation and there service for our 9 reconditioned laptops, and access for those students who may have their own laptops.
PLEASE THANK IDT IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY.
The following photos speak for themselves...The computer centre is busy, busy, busy
The computers at the Middle School (grades 7, 8, 9), which we continue to partner with the World School on, are only available during class time. Families in the village do not have Internet and most have no computer.
High School students go to school either in the morning or the afternoon... There are very few computers at the high schools which means that students must wait their turn for the free computers at Centro Cultura in Progreso or at the Internet Cafes in Progreso or Chelem..( at a cost)
High school student, Miguel Jesus, ( far right) is very happy to be able to do his homework here. |
