El Programa de Apoyo Escolar de Chuburná Puerto A.C.

 Thanks to our 60 sponsors for your ongoing support for  80 students ( 45 girls and 35 boys) 24 Primaria ( grades 1-6) 25 Secundaria (grades 7-9) 27 Prepa ( grades 10-12) 4 College    and for responding so quickly to our request for your sponsorship fees!.   The students finished this past school year on July 12th.  They will return to school on August 19th in their new uniforms, sporting a new backpack full of school supplies all because of your generosity.  Here is a look at what getting ready for the next school year is all about: LAST DAY OF SCHOOL   ... the parents come to the school to write down the supply list from a master list on the wall.....  Bev and I met with the Apoyo parents to make copies of their children's marks so we could get them to you in a timely manner..... ; the Secundaria marks come from the school secretary and the Prepa students are responsible for getting them to us ASAP... Construction is fast and furious at the Tele-Secundaria School in Chuburna  &   Emails between the World School in Boston and ourselves are many as we plan for the August 9th arrival of 9 wonderfully generous members of the School...each carrying 4 large pieces of luggage full of donated computers and monitors. They will install the computers, networked so a supervising adult can make sure they are only used for school work; provide computer training for Peer Leaders and the incoming Grade 7 students; as well as, conduct sports, fitness, ecology clinics for the children.  The Roof is on Contractor Don Lauro from Chuburna Puerto and a big supporter of our program, fit us into his busy schedule and is donating a portion of the labour costs. Our Apoyo Program , The World School, from Boston Massachusetts,   Principal Sergio f rom the Secundaria School, and a local Contractor are partnering to provide children and adults in Chuburna with a Free Computer Centre  for school related studies only.   For us, our children and grandchildren, access to computers is a given.  However, for the students of Chuburna this is not the case. Unlike our experience, there is not a computer or two in every home.. Even students in high school have limited access to a few computers at the school and often must pay for time at local internet cafes.   Our Apoyo program now provides 3 donated computers and internet service at the library in Chuburna.  It is monitored by the librarian. Hello everyone.    This Blog is about the 2nd Joyful Project we are able to undertake with the funds raised at this and last year's Fashion Shows.  As you know, the Apoyo Program matches sponsors with students. However,  we  will never be able to ensure every student has a sponsor.  Therefore, we  do something each year for the benefit of a broader group of children in the village.  EDUCACIÓN INICIAL ( the first education) This drop-in program is offered Mon, Wed, Thurs. and Fridays from 4:00 - 7:00. Ten to 15 moms and their infants-3 year old children attend.  Comfortable on new mats and carpets playing with our new toys The 2 teachers receive $1,000 pesos ( $80.00) a month from a government fund to pay for: Rent: 400 pesos or about $32.00 Supplies including drinking water, toilet paper, cleaning products, arts and crafts materials, toys etc.: 300 pesos or about $24.00  Wages: for working 24 hours each teacher receiv...

Not allowed to eat lunch in their classrooms children sat on the cement covered ground outside, on the outdoor stage; wherever they could find some shade.    Finally, our proposal rose to the top of the principal's list so work began over the course of 4 weekends. The Making of a Successful Fashion Show Fundraiser : On January 26, 2013, at Casa Namasté , 54,000 pesos were raised for the Apoyo Chuburna Puerto  Escolar Program.  As in any successful recipe all ingredients are inter-dependent on each other.  And so it is with this 3rd annual Fashion Show.   THE INGREDIENTS: * Many donations of gently used & new women’s clothing from women who live here and those who visit. *   1 woman   whose passion it is to coordinate outfits from many of the donated clothes, to find models, and to write and read the descriptions of the outfits worn during the show. 1 woman who manages every detail, recruiting and working closely with the volunteers, to ensure a venue, a dresser for each model, waiters, chairs, tables, sound system, music, tickets & programs, raffle & auction items, refreshments and food. * 7 people to ensure the Models' & Boutique clothing is clean...
