NEWS FLASH!!! COMPUTER CENTRE FOR CHUBURNA PUERTO STUDENTS

Our Apoyo Program, The World School, from Boston Massachusetts, Principal Sergio from the Secundaria School, and a local Contractor are partnering to provide children and adults in Chuburna with a Free Computer Centre for school related studies only.

For us, our children and grandchildren, access to computers is a given.  However, for the students of Chuburna this is not the case. Unlike our experience, there is not a computer or two in every home.. Even students in high school have limited access to a few computers at the school and often must pay for time at local internet cafes.

Our Apoyo program now provides 3 donated computers and internet service at the library in Chuburna.  It is monitored by the librarian. However, the space is small and the library is open limited hours.

For several years we have been in conversation with the Principal of the Secundaria School,
Apoyo Director Marta and School Secretary Alina stand in front of
the space to be renovated between the two class rooms.
( grades 7, 8, 9) about a computer center at the school available to community students, whether children or adults, for their studies..  Funding for renovations and access to computers have been deterrents.

UNTIL NOW!..

A group called the World School has been in Chuburna in the past.  They are a charitable organization founded and run by students; most notably by Jordon Frank when he was in high school, continuing his involvement now as a college student.

Last year they set up a similar computer centre in Belize.  So you can imagine our excitement when they contacted us this year about coming back to Chuburna to partner on a project for the village.

And what better project than a computer centre for Chuburna students?

Seven  members of the school will, at their own expense, arrive mid-August, for 8 days.  They are providing 37,000 pesos in funding towards the 70,000 peso renovation and all the computers they can carry down.  We are hoping for at least 10 which they were confident donors will provide.

We  have 20,000 pesos of Fashion Show funds remaining to contribute, therefore, needing to raise an additional 13,000 pesos. A generous member of our international community has donated 3,000 pesos for the air conditioner, leaving a balance of 10,000.  Donations are always welcome. As Bev often says "we appreciate your money, any amount, how ever you want to give it to us."

Donors will be invited to an August  barbecue to celebrate our success and to personally meet and  thank members of the World School.

In addition, the Principal of the School has installed the internet AITEL tower so we have service, and he is donating the cement blocks and the paint.  He is also allowing us to start the renovations during classes to ensure the space is ready for the installation of the computers by the members of the World School upon their arrival.

RENOVATIONS HAVE BEGUN

COMPUTER TRAINING
While 7 members of the World School are here in August, they will provide training for the 50 students going into Grade 7 and to students Principal Sergio has identified as potential Peer Tutors.

ACCESSIBILITY
The computer centre will be open during and after school because of an agreement the school has with the local social services agency, DIF, who will provide supervision after hours.  The school secretary will oversee the space during school hours.

WE KNOW YOU WANT TO GET ON BOARD WITH US SO
